Una storia d’amore, potere e verità nascosta tra le pieghe degli archivi. Ieri sera, alla Biblioteca comunale di Affi, Luigi Grimaldi ha accompagnato il pubblico della terza tappa dell’Extra Festival del Giornalismo di Verona 2026 dentro una vicenda ottocentesca che sembra un romanzo, ma nasce da documenti reali.
Giornalista con esperienza nei grandi scenari di guerra, da Sarajevo al Kosovo, Grimaldi ha raccontato come la sua passione per la storia lo abbia portato a riscoprire, anni dopo, una vicenda letta da ragazzo in un vecchio libro: poche righe su una presunta fuga e un rapimento nella Benevento dello Stato pontificio. Un enigma rimasto aperto fino all’avvento di Internet, quando una ricerca ostinata lo conduce a un ritrovamento sorprendente: gli atti processuali completi, custoditi non in Italia, ma nella biblioteca della Duke University in North Carolina.
Da lì prende forma il cuore del racconto: la storia di Camilla Terragnoli, giovane marchesina di sedici anni, e di Filippo Sgambella, capitano dei carabinieri pontifici. Non un semplice “ratto”, come riportato dalla polizia dell’epoca, ma una relazione complessa, ambigua, segnata da passione, inganni e da un contesto sociale rigidissimo. Camilla, cresciuta in un ambiente controllato e moralmente severo, sfida le convenzioni e rivendica la propria volontà, arrivando a difendere il rapporto anche davanti ai giudici.
Grimaldi ricostruisce i fatti attraverso le carte del processo: la fuga organizzata, l’arresto, la detenzione a Castel Sant’Angelo, lo scambio di lettere e infine la rottura, quando emerge la verità sulla presunta morte della moglie di Sgambella. Un amore che si spezza, ma che lascia tracce profonde, anche nell’immaginario collettivo: ancora oggi, a Benevento, sopravvive il monito popolare “non fare la fine della marchesina”.
Tra ricerca storica e narrazione, l’incontro ha mostrato come il giornalismo possa diventare strumento di scavo nel passato, capace di riportare alla luce storie dimenticate e restituire voce a chi, per secoli, è rimasto intrappolato in una versione ufficiale dei fatti. Una lezione che parte dall’Ottocento ma parla, con sorprendente chiarezza, anche al presente.
